I did it on my sami and it didn't take alot of time.  All the concerns of axle snap or breaking anything else isn't really a big deal when you are dealing with 1.3l of RAW POWER.  It served me well for a long time until it did eventually let go.  I think driving on the street to much is what gets you.  But once it did go I just put a mini spool in and the problem was solved no biggie.  The only hard part about doing it is that you have to take it out of the third member because the spiders are not accessible like some.  The top unbolts and I think you kind of have to fish your way through the ring gear side (its been a while I am trying to remember).  The bad part about taking it out of the third member is that it has the adjuster nuts on the side and you will have to set up your rear end pattern again.  You'll have to do it if you install a spool anyway so its not a big deal.  I would recommend doing it because it is cheap and I put it through about as hard of a test as it ever would and it held up for a couple of years.  Never have broken an axle though.

did you ever get to doing this? I got a mini spool for my sami from Trail Tough. it was $109 + shipping. ran it for a year in my daily commuter. it was a little more predictable than the locker but did wear the tires a little faster... (tire scrub a lot)

Yeah I ran it welded last season but snapped an axle the last trip. I broke the leaf spring bolt that keeps the leafs together and the tire moved back into the fender and binded and snapped the passenger side. I also during that weekend smashed the housing where my SPOA was welded. So this off season i got  complete new rear end and am running a lock right 1530  so we will see how this plays out!!  mine is green stickered so not so worried about the unpredictability the lock right brings to the table :)
