I just bought my first jeep a few months ago, an '01 cherokee and I love it. Of course it has many things added on....but, not sure what has been changed over the years to compare to the '85-'90 models

I had an '88 XJ for a couple of years before I got the Wrangler. I modded the cooling system with later model stuff, lifted it and ran 33's. it had no problem going anywhere in the desert in plush leather, air-conditioned comfort. I really miss the room...

They ran a closed cooling system, no radiator cap, and were quire prone to overheating. Easy swap to an open radiator, change the overflow bottle, add on the heater control valve and thermostat housing from a '92 or later, voila.
Hood vents help too.
