I run cable shifters for my dana 300. If you use cables like they use to steer an outboard boat, push & pull, they work good. try http://www.mcmaster.com/catalog page 1154

~smartass you know I built a homemade sand rail years ago and I bought a cable shifter kit for the rear trans axle. I had to order a different length cable to work for my application ( bear with me ) this cable system works great, it seal's from the environment and it strong enough to push and pull for the shifting pattern. You can order any length you want and the ends are threaded so you could add eye bolts. they have thicker sizes than what I used but I'm sure with a little imagination you could make it work. I bought mine at Car tech in Riverside but I'm sure you can order the sealed cable at any buggy place. they should know what you mean if you approach them.

Good luck.
