Don't talk about it...Let's go wheeling!

« on: June 11, 2009, 09:00:17 PM »

I have the opportunity to pick up some new in the box 15 x8 beadlocks. Bump

The issue is I don't really know much about running them. So here are the things I've heard about them.... hard to balance...don't hold air well, not good for daily driver (although my XJ is only driven to the trail head and on the trail, sits during the week). I know the ability to drop to very low air pressure with out issue. I guess what I want to know is do I jump in or continue to run my Moab?s?

Your thoughts and information are greatly appreciated.

Mine are balanced with 37s no problem. Never had a problem with them holding air. I think the question for yourself would be.. Do you like the looks of them over your Moab's? Do you plan on running bigger tires then what you currently have on?
The plus side of beadlocks is the tire won't spin on the rim at low pressure or flat. They stay on in sharp down hill coners. More tire surface area for better grip. They just look cool.  punk
JP Mag. had a write up on them and pointed out that most flops occured when a tire had popped its bead.  eek So a little extra safety never hurts. right?  ThumbUp

Good beadlocks won't leak air.  I think it's also a myth that they won't balance well.  Just who uses beadlocks just tend to run a bigger tire which could be harder to balance.  You should consider using Dynabeads with these.  Couldn't be simpler.

I had no problems with balancing. I am running 37s. I think the only problem is the DOT factor.

My beadlocks w/ 39's didn't require balancing.

Thanks...I picked them up Friday and my 33 x 10.50 x 15 BFG Mud KM2's should be here midweek. The wheels are Allied's they had tires mounted but never run. The guy decided to go with aluminum beadlocks. Anyway I plan to internally balance them and after seeing them I don't see how they could leak unless you mounted the tire wrong.

I hope to have them on the Cherokee next week. I'll post pics.

Thanks again!

I thought Allied's were aluminum?

They make both.  IMHO, steel ones are the ones to go.  You can always hammer them back into shape if you have to with steel ones, but the aluminum ones may just crack.  Aluminum is lighter and stronger, but when they do go, it won't be a field fix.

15 X 8 Steel Allides were pretty easy to mount and internal balancing was no problem.

I had 15X8 Allied beadlocks and did not balance them at all. Never lost any air and ran very well down the freeway. No complaints.

So using "Airsoft Pellets" for internal balancing work AWSOME!!  33" tires I used 10 oz in each tire. At 70 MPH they are smooth..............................
