I never rebuilt an engine completely through. I have a ford 289 that I want to learn how to break down and build up. Questions:
1. What kit should I go with and from who.
2. How much is involved and how long does it take.
3. Does the engine need to be pulled? ( I don't have a engine jack here)
4. Any old timers have time to show a young guy how to do this?

If I have to pull the engine, I'd like to open up the tcase and tranny to make sure they're all clean and good. I know I have a loose chain in there.

You should buy yourself the chilton's manual.  Cheers

Best to pull the engine and take it to a machine shop first. Does not cost too much to have them dip it and measure it to see if it needs machining.  Most of the rest of the work is pretty easy, if you have the right book (get a real factory manual) and a quality torque wrench.   You can buy an engine stand at harbor freight for < $50

I could probably help you out a little bit.  Look in my jeep thread, I just rebuilt my 351w and it wasn't to bad.

I'm pretty sure I can take care of the top end, it's when i really open it up that I worry. The engine runs pretty good, other than getting hot. It smokes a bit from the valve breather and spits some oil, no a lot. It's an old engine that has sat for a while. I just want to bust it open to make sure nothing is hanging out in their.

Anyone live around Oceanside wanna take a look at this rig and give me some tips? I removed the fenders, grill and hood. I took out the radiator and water pump, but haven't started to dig into the engine. I'm not confidante enough to start this alone.

I live in Oceanside and can help a little bit. I'am not a professional engine builder but have a little experience in that field, and if I can't answer your question I probably know someone who can. Also know a few local shops for parts or machine work. The only times I'am available are during the weekday till 3pm or a little bit on the weekends.
