XJ & YJ

« on: August 19, 2009, 09:57:20 PM »

Im thinking about getting a Ford 8.8 rear end out of a 95 or up Explorer. I know that they come in 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10 gear ratios. My question is which Exlporer comes with the 4.10s? Or how do I identify one? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks ThumbUp

I think the 4x4s came with 4.10s (or 4x4s with tow package). Look for a metal tag on one of the diff cover bolts. It should read  88 4 10  (for an 8.8 with 4.10s with an open diff.) or  88 4L10  (for an 8.8 with 4.10s and a limited slip diff.)  I have seen them at a junk yard but they are harder to find. Most of the ones I saw were 3.73s.

Save crawling under by looking at the door sticker. Also, in my experience the models that are "Sport" generally seem to have 4.10 under them.

3.73 makes up about 90% of the ones you find and don't be afraid of drum brakes. You can swap disk parts from a newer axle. I have been following a thread on JF where they are doing exactly that.

explorer door codes

L - Limited Slip Differential
C - Conventional Differential

Code ... Ratio
41 ...... 3.27C
42 ...... 4.10C
43 ...... 3.08C
45 ...... 3.55C
46 ...... 3.73C
D1 ...... 3.27L
D2 ...... 4.10L
D4 ...... 3.73L
D5 ...... 3.55L

You want a 1997 or newer....take advantage of the disc brakes on your XJ. That what I have in mine and love it!!
