Just how much stuff is enough to take along?  Being prepared is the biggest key to a great trip, but what do you pack up for a weekend trip besides T.P.  ;D U joints, axles...? Just in case list.

i pack as little as possible. weight is not a good thing. i would rather build right and not have to bring extra parts to have to fix it on the trail. but i  make sure i have enough beer if something does go wrong.

Depends on where I'm going and who is along. But on the list and in the box in back, besides tools; several maps, two GPS handhelds, first aid stuff, shelter and survival gear, spare clothing, food, water, a four foot steel rod - useful for the Dana 35, CB/GMRS/2mtr radios, batteries, winch/straps/recovery gear, tire plug kit, spare belts, hose patches, various clamps, zip ties, tapes, spare tie rod and ends, u-joints, various fluids, rtv, service manual for TJ, YJ and Cherokee, Dana 35 axle shafts (even tho I don't have a Dana 35) , trash bags, a folding chair and umbrella, electrical connectors and tape, box of relays and fuses and assorted electrical stuff, light bulbs, an inverter, work light, flashlights, nut bolt and hardware collection, tie-down straps, bottle opener, spare alternator, 4.0 water pump, jumper cables, 4-way wrench, bottle jack, fanny pack, goggles, and a whole lot more. I don't have a back seat so most of it is in a box in the back.

dang, I got a lot of cr@p back there, but I can fix almost anything on the trail, and have. and yeah, I carry too much, but more often than not I'm fixing someone else on the trail and that one part is the one that keeps the trip going. No one gets left behind...

I also always carry too much water on desert trips, especially in the hotter months and have a spot for a cooler to be tied down.

Steve, there has been discussion on making you the head run Guru...Head tour guide Guru... and Pack mule Guru. It is evident that you have got your shit together... or at least a rig full of it. ;D Thanks for the detail, and time you spend on these responces. It helps me out a ton to get such thorough answers and opinions. Glad you are here.

Unfortunately, experience has been the best teacher more than once (not always me but someone in the group); broken axle shaft at Diablo Dropoff and at Bronco Peak, a flat tire at Superstition and plugs but no glue (rtv works good tho), leaking hose at Vallecito and no patches, a burned relay, a leak and no coolant, and so on and so on.

I'd like to travel with less but more than once we've had to stop on the trail and patch someone up to get going again and avoid a trip home. The big rules are; preventative maintenance prevents problems what a concept eh?), carry what you think you might need and then add some, adjust parts stock for the terrain and time, on organized trips split up the parts, everyone should learn basic maintenance skills, if you have a Dana 35 in a Jeep learn how to change an axle shaft and how to avoid breaking one, if you have a Jeep spend the money and buy a quality Torx set and the biggest rule of all, never go alone.

Actually I have a pretty complete set of tools, fire extinguisher, a lot of zip ties, wiring stuff, fluids, tire repair kit, first aid, flashlight, extra clothes, spare belts and hoses and a tarp and rope to make a shelter. Also a lot of water and some food in case I'm stuck overnight.
