I have a 1992 chevy 4.3 in my CJ. The pump was weeping oil out the seal when I installed the motor. I am using the stock jeep box with the chevy pump. After a couple runs the front seal on the pump gave up. My buddy gave me another pump off a V8 that matched mine. I installed it and drove it around town a few times and everything was fine. As soon as I went on a run and had everything locked up and I turned the wheel to full lock the pump started to howl real bad. I let it cool for a few minutes and unlocked 1 hub and that helped but it would still get angry. Now I see that the front seal is stating to drip on this pump as well. The jeep pump looks the same as the chevy pump but I no longer have it. Is there a reason this is happening or just bad luck???  dooh

I'd try doing the pump mod. and adding stop leak see if that take care of it. I'm guessing these are old pumps that were sitting without fluid in them? I think the seals may shrink up without fluid...

Any ideas on a CHEAP cooler. In the old days we used some on our modified ATC 90's. One of those would be great if I could find one.

Aren't pumps also different between rack and pinion and steering boxes? f Different pressures needed thus different valving in the pump.

the chevy trucks with that era motor dind have rack and pinion   they have steering boxes as well

and a cheap cooler     go to vatozone   or pepboys u can get a decent sized transcooler  for 50 dollars
or u can order one online   form place like kartek  or mckenzies
http://www.kartek.com/Product/Cooling/Cooling.html
a plate-fin cooler will cool better than a tube and fin cooler

but a good inline will cool better than both of those

Thanks.  The S-10 was a box.

I put a new front seal in my pump.
Kragen has a cooler for $29.
I will get a couple small fans on the cooler as well. They run about $5 each.

Well this is what I came up with. Everything seems to be ok. I have about  $40 in it. I have the fans turn on when the key is on. I was really suprised how Hot the cooler got.

the reason the cooler is getting hott is because i has no airflow gong through it   put that thing behind ur grill  and that will keep it cool

Its hard to tell in the pic but the cooler is spaced off the fenderwell. Those fans blow pretty well. I was just suprised to see how hot the oil actually gets without even working it hard. This should make a big difference. I didnt want it  in the grill because I have no fan shroud and air flow is minimal. I have a large radiator that keeps it cool so I didnt opt for a custom shroud due to $$$.

i see thats it spaced out a bit   but the fact is u are pushing around hot air right there in the engine bay   it kinda the same concept of a radiator   and why they mount them where air flows through it  though the grill  u will overheat that pump again    u wont really cool it where it is right there   and moun it in front of the radiator

I understand the concept. You cant see it but its got large openings for air just under it. This is better then what I had with nothing. If it still gives me trouble I will make a heat exchanger..

if you put it in fornm of the rad  it will cool without the fans even on so you can hook it up to a temp sensor. chances are if you are getting engine bay air you arent acooling it at all even if you are blowing air through it.

As I stated earlier I DON'T have a fan schroud and the fan is not very close to the radiator. I have a large 3 core and it does not overheat, but it dioesnt pull much air through at low speeds and I don't feel it will cool any better then in the egine bay that has alot of open areas just underneath for cool air . THANKS

i ahve mine in front of the rad with an elctric fan and it helps draw more air through the rad and keeps the whole ride cooler, something to think about.
