Someday I want to put 1 tons under my Jeep. I am not looking to do it right now, but I want to know what to look for. (you never know what deals are out there)
So my questions are:
What years have the right setups for a Jeep swap? Do I go Ford? Chevy?

Also, try to stay away from ford axles with cast wedges and perchs, there a they take DAYS to remove.

Plasma cutter makes easy work of these. My rear d44 had cast perches

yeah I like 70s better. Parts are more expensive but better clearance and deeper ratios.

Be sure to check out which of the D70's you need. I know one of them wont allow for a larger carrier and it limits the gears that you can use.

check your sources before going of what some one says. both the D70HD and 14BT are great axles. you can do a little work and shave off almost 2" off a 14BT and the gears go all the way to 5.38 IIRC. i have 5.13 in mine. the Dana 70HD also can be shaves to have better clearance then the D60. and its gears fo past 5.13 also. i have a D70HD front axle and it also has 5.13s
No the 78 79 ford D60s did not have cast perchs.
