Heres what happened. Went to ocitillo wells over the holiday and came up on a VOLVO in the dez and the owner asked me if I had ever driven over a VOLVO before? Well that sounded like an invite to me. He stated that if he could video it that I could have my way with his car!!  punk
It was fun until I heard the POP  stupid. I knew right where to look, the driver side Ujoint and axle shafts were no longer connected. Not a big deal so i unlocked the hubs and drove back to camp. On the way back (maybe a mile) it felt a little funny but figured it was the front not getting along with its broken self. So I took the axle out thurs nite and drove to border Parts who was open FRI (thanks John). Got a NEW assymbley and installed it.
I went to give her a test drive( CJ5 with SM420 trans, D300 with twin sticks) and felt and heard a clunk!! So I must have broke the diff as well I thought. So I put the transfer case into front drive only with the hubs unlocked and put it into gear and NO noise. Next I put it into rear axle only and got a CLUNK every ten feet (more or less)..
At this point I ASSume the rear ring gear was broke (AMC 20 LOCKED).

Now I have it home and pulled the axles an THEN the cover and NOTHING broken??? eek eek

My Question is do the D300 have issues?? Thats the only thing I can think of thats left?? Any suggestions??

P.S. the volvo was taken home to PICK YOUR PART. The guy is going to send me a link of the video but dont have it yet.

OK, I found it. After some more investigating I removed  the front driveshaft so I could rotate things by hand to get a good feel. It turns out it was the front ring and pinion. It doesnt make sense why it wasnt always making noise but non the less its BROKE.
I have been wanting to take it apart to get rid of the lincoln locker and install the detroit I have for it anyways.
The wear pattern was horrible on the R&P so Im sure that was part of the reason it broke.

Glad you figured it out! Even better that you have a new locker ready to go. TDay
