I can only give you a personal preference here, this may vary from owner to owner. I think I would stay away from the quadratrac transfercase, I would stay away from anything newer than than a 1974 for smog reasons, and Id want A big arss V8... but that just me.

Thats a nice rig but you still have to smog it. It should have power windows and rear defrost thought which are nice creature comforts. If I was gonna start over and buy another FSJ, I would be looking into a pre smog cherokee wide track. They only have two doors but without the rear door you can fit a much bigger tire without having to lift it too high and cut the crap out of the body to make room. The wide track axles make for a much more stable off road rig also. And yes it must have a V8 cause the I6's just don't do very well on the freeway or going up hills Just ask MT. Keep the question coming if you got them. We are more than willing to share the little we know!!! Dave.

im dealing with quadratrac right now, its chain driven and its all time all wheel drive to make it part time you have to spend around about 450-500 to make it part time and its still a chain driven case that could have the potential to fail. Now i have heard a lot of good reviews that for a chain drive T case they are very durable but, they would take extra money to get the part time 4x4 vs most transfer cases are designed for that from the get go.

Its full time 4 wheel drive meaning that you are always in 4 wheel drive and it has a viscous coupler inside the t-case which requires specific and expensive fluid. It is not the strongest case ever made and has both driveshafts on the passenger side of the vehicle which make axle upgrades next to impossible without replacing the t-case. It is chain driven and requires a $90 chain replacement every 50-60,000 miles or else you risk the chain skipping a tooth and grenading the case. There are two models of Quadrapuke t-cases, the BW1305 which "DOES NOT" have low range and the BW1339 which "DOES" have low range. (the low range lever is on the driverside of the tranny hump just in front of the drivers seat) It can be converted to part time 4x4 with a kit like the one from mile marker which is about $450 but you then require the use of a vacuum diaphram to engage for wheel drive. These diaphrams like to go bad (ask me how I know) and they are about $90 and require dropping the t-case to replace. You can make a cable or linkage shifter to rid yourself of the vacuum diaphram but you will need fabrication skills to do it. It is possible to have a Quadrapuke and big tires but it takes a little more maintenace and sometimes a little less of the skinny pedal and they do just fine. For those of us who have owned a Quadrapuke and dealt with them they are not too bad once you figure them out but for the rest of the world who has alwasy dealt with "NORMAL" t-cases they are a pain in the rear! Also the TH400 tranny that all Quadrapuke cases are mounted to has a wierd very long output shaft that requires an expensive adapter or replaceing the ouput shaft in order to swap in a "NORMAL" t-case. If you want to replace the output shaft you have to have the tranny taken apart to do it which is also expensive. What ever you do don't buy an '85 FSJ They had the worst t-case ever and it doesn't work off road. I can't remember why they are so bad but I know not to get one. It might have been '84 I can't remember. Anyways I hope all this answers you questions about the Quadrapuke. Sorry I kinda went on and on. This is 6 years of Quadrapuke experince coming out in about 5 mins. Anyways keep the questions comin. Dave.

Were leaving to check out a FSJ. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Trying not to get too excited and hoping its a solid rig. I've been waiting for this oppertunity for almost 2years!

All right guys, I did it , I got an 87 Wagoneer. Picked it up this afternoon and took it straight out to Pancake Rock. It did pretty well for being stock w/o lockers and fairly worn rear tires. A couple things happened while we were out I had the truck in 4lo. As we were going up the trail it seemed that the gas tank was getting pressurized and forcing gas out of the gas cap. when I took the cap off, gas came pouring ou of the fill tube. I think that may of happened because we were going up hill. On the way down it didnt push gas out of the filler but there was still alot of pressure in the tank. When we got back on the road we stopped in Alpine and I removed the gas cap and there wasnt any pressure release. The other thing of concern is, when it wasin 4lo it sporatically would go into neutral. I'm not sure if it is the tranny or the transfer case. The engine would rev and then it would grab like it was beeing neutral banged. Any ideas?
