I have the same problem with my gas cap, I ran Sidewinder in Coral Canyon in my stock FSJ, climbing up the waterfall, I spilled quite a bit of gas. My gas cap doesn't lock or tighten up at all. The threads are all jacked up. The PO desided to use a locking gas cap to slove that problem and it doen'st work to well. I still haven't figured out my solution, but I might be hitting a few junk yards to see if I can't get my hands on a new filler. As far as the neutral, that sounds like a transfer case issue. I believe the 1987 Jeeps have the NP 229 transfer case which uses the viscous coupler. My Jeep has the NP 228 (86 only used this transfer case) which does not have the viscous coupler. I think the first thing I would do is change out and possibley flush the fluids to make sure you have some clean fluid in there. Also, check with IFSJA.org. There is a wealth of knowledge the the folks there are very helpful without making you feel stupid for asking a question.

Might check the tranny mount. Mine was shot and would pop the tranny out of gear if I really gassed it then it got so bad that the transfer case would bump the gas tank and nock it out of gear. It was like and $8 part. I would start there.
Dave.

tranny mount and engine mounts both, i had an issue with my jeep popping out of gear when i busted a motor mount, engine would tork and pull the linkage out of alignment and out of gear we went. start there and hope its not something worse inside the tranny or the Tcase

I would check all the mounts first ( motor and trans) and if those are good check the level of the transmission. if the trans is low it will let the clutches slip. Everytime I've seen a transfer case go into neutral with the auto transmission in gear, you would have to ether put it into park or shut off the truck to get the t-case back into gear. because of this i would look more into the transmission not the t-case. just my $.02

After some research I was starting to think transmission. When it was "going into neutral" I was in 4lo, which if I understand the literature, the NP229 has a mechanical coupling in 4lo and a viscus coupling in 4hi. I checked the tran fluid today on flat ground and it was full and didnt smell burnt. I checked the trans mount and it didnt seem collapsed. The motor mounts unless they arent stock seem like solid pieces of rubber. I'm afraid there is a trans issue except for the fact that it drive great on the street, no slips, no funny or hard shifts.

It's just that I for one can appreciate the natual beauty and sex apeal of an FSJ. But then again I do have a very safistcated and finely calibrated eye for a beautiful body.

Soooooooo, I went and purchased the least expensive motor and trans mount that I've ever seen. $4.99 for each motor mount and $5.99 for the transfer mount. I found out that both my motor mounts were torn in half. Makes me feel better that its not a trans issue.

Nice!!! I had a feeling it was a mount. It sounded too close to what mine was doing with a bad tranny mount. Time to go test it again.
