I apologize, I haven't been on for a little while but I've come across something that I need a bit of help with. I've got that 90 Bronco, it has about 120k miles on it. Over the past couple days I've been hearing an occasional knocking. It's pretty random, sometimes I'll hear it for a second when it starts up, sometimes it'll happen when I come to a stop, never really on acceleration. I haven't dealt with this before so I'm not completely sure where to start. Is there any general starting off points that I should look into first? Anything I should check? This is my DD so I'd like to get it taken care of asap. I appreciate your help!

Knock= Bad Tick= Not as Bad Is it more of a ticking sound, or a knock?

I'll go listen again real quick. But like I mentioned, I don't have much experience with this so is there a definite noticable difference between a knock and a tick? Forgive my ignorance and any stupid questions I ask in advance.

Just checked it and it wasn't making the sound at all, running really smooth actually. I did notice that the oil is really really low, could that make it make a funky sound?

Low oil can cause some sounds. Also those ford motors don't do well with old oil. The lifters for the rear to cylinders gum up really easy. I have seen a few fords with random lifter ticks and taps because of it gumming up over the years.

Yes... Low oil will allow some knocking sounds. Actually that's how I know to add oil. When it starts ticking I add a quart when it starts knocking I add 2 quarts. Top it off and give another report.

I had a F150 that when you started it it would knock untill it built oil pressure. Gotta love Ford motors

throw some of that lucas oil stabilizer in it too. that stuff will take care of some of the knocking. also when you do your oil change, before you drain the oil throw in a jug of motor flush. and let it run for about 15 minutes. let it cool and drain. ive also heard of some guys draining out about half their oil and replacing it with diesel and running the motor for about an hour. i havent actually done that so i cant comment. but i heard it will pretty much make the motor squeaky clean.
but i like the motor flush. its in a large gray bottle.

Turned out it was just low on oil, really really low. Put five quarts in and it stopped knocking three minutes later. Now I'm worried about the leak. There is a seemingly small drip that looks like it's coming from the engine/transmission seal, is this common? I've heard from a number of people that older trucks just leak, nothing you can do about it, true? Again, y'alls help is greatly appreciated!

what kind of oil did you use. alot of the cheaper oils use parafin to make it thicker. parafin is wax. so when the engine heats up it basically turns into water. try using a better oil. and a thicker oil, like a 10w40. and adding that lucas oil stabilizer.. also, you can by cans of this stuuf called engine resotre, its in a silver colored can. that stuff is made to be soaked up by the seals and does a pretty good job of stopping leaks. i use it in the 4runner and it stopped my oil leak. just put it in the ford today, so we'll see.

That's really low considering that the motor only holds 5 quarts in the first place... Ford and leak are to words commonly found in the same sentence

I've been using Quakerstate High Mileage 10w40, but they didn't have enough at kragen when I went so I filled up with Valvoline High Mileage, same viscosity. And I guess I won't really worry about the leak too much if it's pretty expected. Everything else works beautifully though, I absolutely love this truck.
