If you have a PC, windows movie maker is built in and it's real simple to use. Just doesn't have lots of features and not the greatest output but it's easy and does a decent job.

Mac has iMovie built in which is a lot better.

There are other program which are pretty easy to use

If you're really serious there adobe premier is what the pro's use it it's a steep learning curve.

Guess it depends what you want to do. The average joe doesn't care about titles and editing. They just record a clip right out of the camera and upload it to the web and that works fine as well.

I use my older Sony Digital 8 camcorder and a Helmet Cam remote camera.
For editing I just use Windows Movie Maker.  Its super easy to use.  I agree with Mike330, it's got enough features to get you started.  If you need more bells & whistles then Adobe is nice.
A friend uses it and I've played around with it on his 'puter.

Here's the first mx video I did on Windows MM and I didn't know nothing about it.  I just spent a few hours play with it:

Editing movie can be fun be time consuming.
