I think the Gps is one of the greatest inventions ever. We use the Magellan Maestro with the 3.5inch screen. Money well spent.

The gps for my jeep is a NAVIGON. Its awsome for the street. It tells me how far the turn ahead is. It also says please turn around, your going the wrong way when I don't make the right turn. The best feature is the rerouting if there is traffic ahead.

DesertCrawler-I had the same issue n an old GPS. Try bending the springs to make the batteries fit tighter. It worked for me.
I have 3: Lowrance540c (permanent mount) in the buggy, garmin nuvi 760, and a lowrance hand held.
the nuvi has offroad mode.
I use the handheld lowrance and nuvi for geocaching as well as regular navigation.

I have Lowrance dreams and a map and compass budget so here's what i ended up with;
A hand-me-down Garmin etrex, it's your very basic GPS, usually lives in the center console
A Cobra GPS 100, picked it up off eBay super-super-cheap (which is really the only reason I got it), useful as a back up, difficult at times to download info to it from the computer, makes it's living chasing down geochaches
The main one is a Garmin GPS 72, another eBay super-cheapie (definition of super-cheapie = >$20)
All are good for what they are, none are really useful for real-time mapping as in driving. I've found tho that it's hard to find a handheld or dash-mount GPS that has decent maps in areas I go, like the desert, but to be fair, I've also found that the available maps of the Anza-Borrego area are not all that accurate either (which is why I carry three different maps in the Jeeps along with a GPS)
If I really have no clue where I'm going I use a laptop (used to use a PocketPC), a GPS and topo mapping software, gives me updateable maps, the ability to use satellite images and 3D. Really good software for this is OziExplorer, awesome software, you can scan your own maps, download maps, easy to use, a bit pricey but worth it
Now if anyone has a spare Lowrance Baja sitting around
