I think a really good place to mount it would be either the center of the dash or off the top roll bar above the windshield and to the passenger side of the rear view mirror

I have the garmin GPS60 for hand held. I will eventually put a Lowrence in. Anyone got advice on which one to get? I will buy one in a few months since my rig will be down for a little while getting a cage and new seats.

I have a Alpine Blackbird II that "docks" inside of the Alpine Head-Unit stereo, and then uses the 6.5" screen to display the maps, etc...  (Although, currently, it only works now and then; I think I have a bad connection in the back.)

I took that photo because one time the GPS had my Jeep as a maximum speed of 125 mph  ??? (yeah, right!)

I also have one of those Garmin eTrex GPS units (pretty cheap, grey-scale screen) that I use on my boat.

But what I have been looking at recently is the Garmin Rino 530HCx GPS/FRS Radio (pretty expensive - but some great features like ". . . the Peer-to-Peer function. Your position will appear on any other Rino user?s display that you are communicating with and vice versa." Perfect for knowing where the boys have run off to when you can't see them.)

For offroad use, it's hard to beat the Garmin 60CSx.  Not all GPS receivers are really meant for offroad use so they have trouble when they can't put you onto a road in the database.  Nor do they all have the "cookie crumbs" feature you can use to backtrack out of an area or store a trail with. That's why I like the 60CSx, it is totally well equipped for anything offroad, though it can also do automatic route calculations to an address, etc.   I'm on my seventh or eighth GPS by now and after having started with Magellan, I'm sold on Garmin's stuff though some of Lowrances bigger displays are starting to grab my attention since hitting 60. :)

The family told me to pick out a GPS for them to buy me for Christmas. I dunno  001_9898 about them.

I do know I want one that is great for off road and can navigate me around town as well. I think it would be cool to mount it on my Jeep roll bar, then unhook it and put it in another vehicle.

Any ideas and model numbers would be great.

Thanks...

I have a Garmin street pilot that takes me to shady neighborhoods (to buy drugs i suppose) while traveling in straight line. Even when updated, it sometimes loses roads, but always gets me where i need to go.

But i use a Garmin etrex vista for real navigation and plotting. It's about $200 average, but it's really basic unless you really know how to use it. I've had it since 05 and it's proved it self time and time again everywhere in the world.

i got a cheap garmin nuvi 205 and it does everything i need it to do. actually alot of the trails i run are already mapped out on it. its got a neat tracking feature that will kind of track everywhere i've been and allow me to back track if i was ever to get lost on the trail. and im stil able to use it for on the road too and that works great.
