Mine are 3/4".........hmmmmm, or is it 1/2" plate.... hmmmmm..... with holes for the shackles. Anyways, the plate runs through my rear 2"x4" bumper and is welded on both the front side and the rear. Ahhhhh Maaan. as I typed this, I just realized you were asking about D-rings, not shackles......... I need to pay more attention. You do mean D-rings as oppossed to shackles, right? Shackles with mounts welded in are much stronger then D-rings.

Yeah but you know us Banjo makers are cheap and try to make everything out of scap laying around the shop. On these... I understand the bevels on the edges for better weld penetration but whats the deal with the channel cut down the center of the mounting side. Dave.

d-rings and shackles are a pretty interchangeable term. and good point on welding in line with the frame. Mine double as my tow bar connector.

Yeah that sounds like a great way to mount them but unfortunatley we thought of this to late in the build so I think there will be no shackle mounts on this bumper. Oh well we'll just have to think of somewhere else to mount them. Maybe under the bumper on the bottom of the factory frame rail. I don't know???? Thanks for the educational session guys! Dave.

Next trip to the junkyard grab some tow hooks from a late model chevy or gmc truck. beefy, easy to unbolt and a good size.

These are what I was looking at. They are $23 plus shipping. They are designed to be welded to the front and back of a 2 inch bumper. I think it is something that can be easily added even after the build. And I think a great way to mount a solid tow point.......for towing everyone else out. http://www.rokmen.com/tj_products/diy_fabrication_parts/diy_shackle_mounts/diy_shackle_mounts.html

Yes, the D-rings I showed above are good for adding on flat surfaces. We use them at work for attaching trailer chains to our flatbed trucks. But there are only as strong as the flat steal surface you weld them to. Hence the reason I stated in my first reply that shackles with plate welded on both the front and rear of the bumper are stronger. But again, D-rings are a good choice.

There is a massive plate inside the bumper that cannot be cut into at this time in order to go all the way through with a piece of stock. Making them isn't an issue I already have the material just can't run it through in a strong spot on the bumper at this point. Hind sights 20 - 20! Dave.
