How big of alternator is big enough...
Im going to have to be replacing the alternator on the Hippo and was wondering how many amps is enough for all the extra things associated with off roading. Any first hand experience with amprage size and makes. Ideas as to what model Chevy to find a heavy duty alternator from.

I would think a 130a is fine for normal stuff. If you have 10 100w lights, a 1000w stereo, or some other heavy amp draw kind of stuff you could go 220a.

early 90's Caddy Deville have the cs144 which is the swap we did on chiefs. Pretty sure thats 140 amp and we got it for $18 on half price day at Ecology.

140A should be fine. I had one on my bronco with 7 8" lights, a chase light, 500 watt stereo, and electric fuel pump. never had a problem

130 amps and a good battery you'll be fine.

Unless your planning on running a welder from it a 130a is more than plenty.Late model Chevy burb single wire, should be easy to mount and if you have to replace it in the middle of BFE the parts store should have it in stock, remember K.I.S.S it makes life easy er in the long run.   |

Big props to Dave Moorehouse and Big Dave at Wrights Racing. They got together and donated a nice new 160 amp single wire alternator to the Desert Hippo Project. I installed it last night and its wonderful!!! Thanks to both Daves for hooking me up, it is truly appreciated.  160 Amps should get er done...  |

Happy to help. Doing you more good than is was for us just sitting in the garage. Not sure you'll ever really strain that 160a but its nice to have just incase.

Ya nice if you need to weld up a bridge I beam or power up a small city!  Just kidding ,thats what its all about helping each other out with small or big problems if you can,If your on the trail and break down you know that there will be 4 or 5 guys right there to get you going again, Knowlegde is power and if we all get together we might have enough to match MTs new 160a alt. |
