ive been using a garmin nuvi 205 for about 4 years now and it hasnt done me wrong. its not an offroad gps but alot of the trails we run are marked on there already. pancake rock is marked. pretty much every blm or state park road is marked. got the option to trace a trail from where you came from so if yo get lost you can find your way back. it only cost me about 150 at the time. i think they are about 100 now. you can search stuff by cordinates if you got those too. all in all a great little gps.

I have an Oregon 300 that has served me pretty well. I don't use it for finding trails or routes as much as I thought I would but it's really handy for marking trail heads and tracking. It has topo maps as well so you can see the general surrounding geography.
Here is a recent trail marking. It takes a mark about every 10 feet so it's pretty detailed if you zoom all the way in.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 760, dual purpose GPS. It works well and has settings for off road, (on road) faster time or shorter distance. You can program routes via way points. I also use Garmin Topo software on my PC to plan trips, both on and off road and down load to my GPS. I used it to plan my Mojave Road trip earlier this year and the trip was great. The route got us to all the places we wanted to see. Places off the beaten path, like an ice cave in the middle of the desert. The software was about $65 on line and the Garmin 760 was $240.00 if I remember right. I have had mine for 4 years or so. I know Costco sells Garmin products.
