920 Oceanside, but my heart lives in Baja!

WWW
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:19:17 PM »

I met Dave and Chad last week in the snow by Pine Valley and they invited us to this site... I have been posting on TacomaWorld.com since getting my 2010 Tacoma. Another Tacoma World 4WD owner 'Josh' was also on this Tacoma run. A third Tacoma wanted to play, but was only 2WD and not even a locker... Dave and Chad rescued him out of a rut and showed him the way back to asphalt (where 2WDs all belong)!

I have been four wheeling my entire life... well since 1965 when I was 7 1/2! My folks got a Jeep Wagoneer (in '65) to travel into Baja California that year... and many since.

When I was 17, being a good kid payed off as I received a new Jeep Cherokee Chief as a graduation present. Until then I drove a Myers Manx dune buggy to school and into Baja after turning 16.

The AMC Jeep was great but only briefly between repairs as nearly everything failed on it (and it was brand new)... Next came an affordable vehicle... Subaru 4WD wagons (I had three from '77 to '94).

My first Toyota was a 2001 Tacoma 4WD Off Road and was truly the best built vehicle and now I am on #3 (5 year leases each). I am active on BajaNomad.com forums since I am a big fan of Baja travel.

Have a look at a recent Baja caravan I lead last year to Mision Santa Maria on one of the most famous BAD roads in Baja!: See our wild trip with Nomads to Mision Santa Maria in 2010: http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/msm2010/

I look forward to more fun four wheeling!

Oh, and I hope nobody here is affraid of a little body damage?!

Thanks a bunch!

Give me some time to figure out your forum set up, let me know if I make a mistake!

You guys like photos to go with reports? I am heading out to Ocotillo Wells today to test my new tires in sand (Hankook Dynapro ATM) as they passed the mud/ snow test with flying colors!

Thank you! Here are a few photos from the road to Mision Santa Maria, Baja California taken on our 2007 trip (with my 2005 Tacoma and Roy's LR3 Land Rover):

This grade I call the Widowmaker and is just over a mile before the mission. Going down is one thing, coming back up is the big thing! A rear locker or traction control is a big help to go with low range 4WD!

What else is interesting to discuss here: 4WD systems/ traction controls/ how to 4WD over different surfaces/ places to go four wheeling/ to mod or not to mod a new 4x4/ trip reports/ tires???
