I have a friend with an xj and he either blew automatic trans or the transfer case. It'll go into gear and drive for about 50yards then it will act like it goes into neutral. He shuts it off for twenty minutes or so and it'll go another 50 or so yard. 1:what could the prob be? 2: does anyone have an auto trans or a t case? Thanks.

Wow, Sounds like not a fun time for sure. How is the guy gonna get home? Either way, it sounds like a bad day.

Actually it was a great weekend at the retreat. As for getting it home I had a 100 mile tow on AAA. We dove my truck home and had my friends XJ to my house.

What year is it? Its should have the AW4 and a NP231 or 242. The t-case shifter is mounted to body under the trans tunnel, and they can wear out and pop in and out of gear, I happend to mine and i replaced it with a novak shift kit. If its a 242 t-case try putting it full time mode and take it for a drive. Before my xj a ax-15 5-speed it had the aw4 auto, and the clutch packs in it went out and the tranny sliped like crazy. xj parts are cheap.

No, when it does move it acts like there is nothing wrong with it at all. Good acceleration, no noises, then all of a sudden, nothing.

My tranny would do that in my ZJ and it ended up needing a complete rebuild. Cost a few buck but I had them put in a shift kit and a stronger torque converter while they were fixing it.
Does the tranny fluid smell burnt and how does it look?

Come to think of it the fluid is kinda brown and didn't smell that good.
