So we have an almost stock TJ. Put Rubicon take off wheels and tires on it. Want to keep it usable on the street so can't get to crazy with mods. It gets around pretty good off-road but I've seen a lot of Jeeps with tons of upgrades. There's so many options it difficult to know where to start.

Gimmie your thoughts

What's most important
What to do first
What's the most bang for the buck

What do you plan on using the jeep for? With your yota rig under construction I would guess your not going to do anything major to the jeep.

I'll use it to rescue the buggy when it breaks. :)

There's a lot of places we like to go where you have to be street legal so it will see a lot of dirt. Just not extreme stuff. I've been offroading for awhile just never owned a Jeep so I know nothing about them and actually, this is the wifes rig. Now she gets all these aftermarket catalogs and starts sayin I like this and I like that.

Gotta keep her happy.

I'm hoping to find a happy medium.

With Rubicon Express being closed I would look at Clayton Off Road http://claytonoffroad.com/index.html
or maybe Sktjacker http://skyjacker.com/ and there are others out there but this will give you a starting point.
I think since this not your main trail rig I would stick with a short arm kit.

X2 with at least 33" tires, you'll be able to wheel most trails with some spotting. If you can swing it put a rear locker in Cheers

Taller tires, better axles, Lockers and go... That thing will take ya anywhere without fear of not returning with just a few basic mods. Even stock they are awesome little grunt machines. Like Mike said, your building the serious machine now just build the Heep for recovery and the goofing around on quick runs. punk

I've been very impressed at what these Jeeps will do so far. I put the Rubicon stock wheels I got from a buddy on. They're about a 30" tire. 275/75/R16. I also have a set of Desert Traks for it to use in the sand. Been out to Glamis a few times and could pretty much go everywhere as long as I picked a good line. We did the green course at TDS no problem. I definately think a rear locker would help.

As for suspension I get lost. Body lift? Suspension lift? How much lift? How much lift before you start creating other problems that need to be addressed.

Any engine modifications I should be thinking about. (Besides a V8) - Over kill for this vehicle's intended use.

Thanks for the feedback

Paid 7 for the jeep. Probably want to stay at or below that on upgrades.

Check these guys out. they are will to beat anyones prices and you can haggle with them.
http://www.northridge4x4.com/

I like the TeraFlex stuff. They have a 4" LCG kit that looks cool, but $$$$.
If you want a soft ride go with a long arm.
http://www.teraflex.biz/products/

Personally, I have the Rock Krawler kit 5.5" Long Arm. love it. I did a bunch of other mods that make my ride bitchen on/off road.

Just FYI anything of a lift more then 2.5" you'll want to add the Slip Yoke Eliminator kit and up grade your rear drive shaft. Bring your check book tell me what you want. I'd be happy to put together for ya'.

What would you like to know? I posted some info on our intro in the new members section. I should have it rolling in the next month or so.

Looking for a complete 22R if anyone has one for sale.

I've got a 2005 TJ. I wheeled it for a couple years basically stock (31" BFG ATs) and had no real issues. It was capable, rode well, and was just fun to drive.

The minute I put a lift in, I started running into problems. Each fix seemed to cause a new problem that required another upgrade. It now sits on a 3.25" lift, locker in the front, lsd in the back, 33" MTs, adjustable this, unbreakable that, etc. It looks cool, but my wife doesn't want to go anywhere in it. (neither do I to be honest)

Anyway, I guess the only feedback I can offer is this.

Have you come across any trails or obstacles that you really want to do but can't do now?
If not, maybe leave well enough alone and spend the money on beer.
