I've got a 2005 TJ. I wheeled it for a couple years basically stock (31" BFG ATs) and had no real issues. It was capable, rode well, and was just fun to drive.

The minute I put a lift in, I started running into problems. Each fix seemed to cause a new problem that required another upgrade. It now sits on a 3.25" lift, locker in the front, lsd in the back, 33" MTs, adjustable this, unbreakable that, etc. It looks cool, but my wife doesn't want to go anywhere in it. (neither do I to be honest)

Anyway, I guess the only feedback I can offer is this.

Have you come across any trails or obstacles that you really want to do but can't do now?
If not, maybe leave well enough alone and spend the money on beer.

Good Point - stock hasn't let us down yet

From the many Jeeps I have seen for a TJ basics for me would be 4" susension lift (NO T CASE DROP GET A DRIVE SHFT) and 33" tires and proper gears that will get you though 99% of the stuff without a rippen and a tearing it up ,a locker is nice but if you go out with someone else with one and they have a winch you can get over with that too

learn and build it all yourself. There is a lot of information out ther on the web to help you out and a lot of people out here to guide you  as well. Here is what I would do.

1. Custom long arm w/ coilovers ~ you will be amazed what a rig can do w/ a great suspension system.
2. 35? or 37? tires
3. Axle gears w/ lockers or upgrade axles to 1 tons if possible
4. Custom cage ~ safety first
5. Chop off all non-essential items
1.   Carpet
2.   Rear seat
3.   Tail gate
4.   Stereo system
5.   Center console
6.   Half doors
7.   Wind shield
8.   Stock gas tank ~ replace w/ fuel cell
6. Dovetail
7. Boat side
8. Do not care about body damage!
9. Dream about a full tube buggy or Truggy every night!

Kind of on the late side for this but if it was my jeep. I would put Hyline fenders 35" meat 1" BL flat skid and some Dana 44"s out of a Rubicon and have fun.
