Been a few questions about the new car we're building so as recommended, here's a build thread. Might take a few days to get it all in here.

The project concept started last year when we decided it was time for a new car. I really wanted something different this time. We spent quite a while with various builders until I found one capable and willing to take on the project. John Mosely (Mosebilt)

A little background. We don't like to limit our off-roading to any one type of terrain. It could be Glamis one weekend, Johnson Valley the next and anything interesting we can find in between. My hope was to come up with a design which would perform reasonably well in different types of terrain. Of course, a Side x Side was an option but I've never been a huge fan and wanted something that felt and was built more like a real car. Another important consideration was cost. It would be very easy to dump 100k plus into this but the average guy could never possibly afford that. My goal was to build the car for about the price of a fixed up Side x Side around 20k or less.

John really stepped up to the challenge with some innovative design ideas. The original thought was to use Jeep running gear. We decided to go with Toyota instead for a better HP/weight ratio and also keep the cost down. the whole drive train was less then 2k. No expensive transaxels. etc. We're using stock torsion bars to hold the car up instead of expensive coilovers.

I also wanted a mid-engine car so we flipped everything around and upside down. Rear diff in front and front diff in rear.

I know, I know, Long winded post.
Here's a few early pix of  the build to lighten things up then I'll get back to the story  clap

That's going to be intresting to drive with the shift pattern upside down.

Stock diffs. Open front or (limited slip), locker rear. We aren't running reverse gears. We'll be running on the coast side. is it weaker-yes...will they break-no...almost every single production "straight axle" truck (ford, dodge, chevy, toyota) ran the same rear diff in the front axle, on the coast side of the gear...and many "crawlers" still do. whats more important is proper gear set up

Took a little thinking here but we got it so the shift pattern is normal.

I guess you're right about sayin "I won't break it" seems like I tend to brake most of the toys sooner or later.

All part of the fun.

John got the diffs and I'm not sure what they came out of. He's been building Yota stuff for over 20 years and has a good rep so I trust him. I'll find out and report back if you want.

So if we're ready, here's the next set of pix. Keep in mind this car is almost finished so I have quite a few pix. These are as the chassis starts coming together.

I'll try and get the pix caught up to current on this post. The car came off the table last week for final welding. Welding is complete and it's going back together now. Then it's time to spend a few more bucks for all the little stuff. Engine, plumbing, wiring, LED light bar, etc.

Gonna be eatin mac and cheese for awhile....... clown
