So, I headed out to Corral Canyon with some guys I used to work with this morning.  There were four jeep total with one girl out there for the first time ever.  We desided that Gunslinger was the trail of the day cause it's easy.  The day started off with more over heating on my part.  By the time we got to the trail head, I was already starting to over heat.  After a little bit of time to let the Jeep cool down, we headed out.  Shortly into the trail, I started to overheat even worse.  After getting even more frustrated due to all the work I have done on my cooling system, I popped the hood and noticed that the new hose that runs from the radiator to the over flow tank was blocking the fan from turning.  A quick zip tie later, overheating issues solved.  We went along our merry way enjoying the day, then this happened:

Coming down a rather steep section of Gun Slinger/ Bronco Peak, I took a bad line and right as I was trying to recover from the bad line, my engine died and I lost steering and brakes.  I slid down into a rut too fast causing me to slowly roll over.  The really scarey part was that I had the wife and kids in the Jeep with me.  Everyone was and is okay.  The kids were scared at first, but quickly recovered.  A phone call to another co-worker brought the calvery.  4X4HO along with a band of merry merauders were quick to the resque.  Four Wranglers ( a big thanks to 4X4HO who put his jeep in a pretty bad spot in order to help in the recovery), two wenches, two hi lift jacks, and I don't know how many tow straps later, the Jeep was back on four wheels.  My buddy used his wench and tow strap to get me down to a flat spot.  We popped the hood, checked the fluids, and tried to get her started.  It took a little bit, but the engine fired up and burned off the oil.  We added some trans fluid and slowly started to drive down the trail.  I was able to get the jeep down the trail ( the wife and kids walked) and back to four corners safely.  A quick pow-wow and we desided to hit to surface streets back to San Diego.  I was able to drive the Jeep home.  No major damage to the jeep.  The passenger side front fender is dented up, the passenger side front door has a nice dent from the tow strap.  The wind shield is all cracked up, and the windshield frame will have to be straightened.  My precious new roof rack took the blunt of the damage and will probibly need to be rebuilt.  All in all, it was still a good day on the trails.  The Jeep really impressed me today and is worthy of being re-built better.... stronger.....(que the 6 million dollar man music)  Again, a big thanks goes out to all the off roaders who stopped and helped (sometimes putting their rigs in some tight spots).  My wife was really impressed with the people that helped us and the whole off roading community in general.

Believe it or not, the wife was okay with it.  She said the day was still fun regardless of the roll over.  Of course, I had to buy the kids off with pizza and ice cream for dinner, but it was in fact a good day all things considered.

I think this is a great opportunity for the less experienced to reflect on how easy it is to get out of shape on the trails. With just a few added pieces of equipmment it is easy to makes them even safer.  Lot to be said for flopping the rig with the family inside and driving it home afterwords. Good Job Chief.

It truly is, Most fun you can have going slow!

I am sorry to say that no, it wasn't that ugly.  There were some pretty deep ruts on the right side of the trail.  I attempted to avoid them cause I had the wife and kids in the car and I didn't want to scare them by dropping into the ruts, si I tried to drive around them.  That put me a little off camber, but not too bad.  I was trying to get back into the center of the trail when the engine died and I couldn't slow down or steer.  I ended up sliding into one of the ruts a little too fast causing us to roll.  I wish I could say that I was at the top of Jack Hammer or Sledge Hammer, but it was little ole Gunslinger.  Go figure.
