Picked up a 97 Grand Cherokee with a NP249, d30, and d44a with 194k miles.
On the front axle, diff has bad carrier bearings. One of the unit bearings was just replaced, but now it's making more noise than ever and stinks like hell.
Also, the viscous couplers in the transfer case are dying, so it's going to need a rebuild or replacement soon too.

Everything I'm reading says to just replace the whole front axle and transfer case due to the cost of rebuilding.
But I'm leary of junkyard axles as they may end up having the same problem.
I also know I'm going to be dealing with the same thing with the rear axle assembly too.

Guess I'll call around and get some quotes to be sure, but wanted to post up here and see if there were other options.
Ideas?

Thanks,

I dealt with bad a bad pinion bearing in the rear axle when I had my ZJ.  I called a few different places and it was an average of $800 - $1000 to have it rebuilt.  I ended up scoring a low mileage rear axle from a friend of a friend for $200.  I would say try to find a replacement from the junk yards on half price days.

Contact Billybob13 for the D30 Repair. Don't know about the TC.

What size gears are you running? might want to upgrade if you plan on bigger tires.  Cheers

What's on the other side? Maybe we should look first. (Na' it will give us something talk about later)

They're 3.73s. The tires now are like 27 inches.
I definitely want to re-gear for bigger tires later, but there's a lot to do before I get there. (lift, axles, transfer case, etc)
For now, I just have to get it back on the street so I can get to work and make enough money to pay for it all.

Looks like it's gonna get a used hp30 for now and then we'll beef that up down the road.

Still not sure about the transfer case. I like the idea of full-time 4wd, but the 231 is supposed to be less trouble.

No, not yet. It's sitting out in front of my house collecting bird poop at the moment.
The t-case and axle replacement are on hold while I deal with some tax issues.

Hopefully in a few weeks I'll have enough saved up to do them both and have it back on the road.
What a pain.
