I've been looking on line at complete axle packages for my jeep and it look's like axles that will bolt right in with lockers and new gears will run around seven thousand $$ ~eek. Thats way more than I want to spend. Has anyone here bought complete axles from a junk yard and if so were they super expensive??

Now's the time I wish I would have spent the extra cash and got a Rubicon instead of the X package.

depends on what you want. the junkyards are full of axles.

there are a ton of hondas and isuzu's with D44's, but they are 6 x 5.5 bolt pattern. There are some cherokee once in a while.

I just got an 8.8 a few weeks ago. The most common gearing is 3.73, 4.10 is hard to come by.

paid about $130 for the axle with disk brakes included. Probably spent about $800 for the full swap including an sye and new driveshaft.

rear only, so far.

Double check what your rear axle is. It is possible that it could be a D44 if that is the case you would only need the front and your costs would be less

Just pick up a set of Rubicon axles. You can find all over for around $2400 a set.

I could not afford D44 right now so my band aid fix was to buy yukon HD axles that are still the 27 spline. they say they are 25-35% stronger than stock. I will keep my stocks as spares for now. It's just another option that only cost a few hundred.

I have axles from an '05 Rubicon under my '98 TJ, I got them uber-cheap off Craigslist a couple of years ago from a totaled rig.

They are very easy to install and almost a direct bolt-in (I'll do a short write-up tonight and post it in the tech section).

They are quite capable axles, already have lockers and they have been pretty well abused, but, I have 35'" X-Terrains on them and I'm not that comfortable with the bigger tires on those axles. If you're going to run 33's it a good swap, locally Rubi axles go for about $1400 each although I've seen them cheaper here and there.

Somewhere in the future I'm going to go with an 8.8 in the rear and either a D44 or HP D30 in the front, junkyard builds that can be done affordably.

HardRock 4x4 dismantling, has anyone from San Diego been there? They have a set for 2750.00. They say it's there last set but for some reason I don't beleive it.

I've known Johan for many years, don't believe it.

That's not too bad of a price but...

he is a salvage yard so check the axles very, very carefully, if the Jeep was a roll-over or a hard frontal/rear impact the axles may not be straight. Same thing for a toasted Jeep, I've seen suspension/steering parts sold off a Jeep that was incinerated and the integrity of the parts after being subjected to that much heat was questionable. Remember you'll also need the air pumps, get a package price from him and you'll also need at least two switches (I have mine wired thru three switches, one powers the the other two - no accidental engagements...) As always, caveat emptor

hardRock is a good source for hard to find and obscure parts for a Jeep, but expect to pay a premium price, he has the market cornered, but he is very easy to negotiate with when (non-reporting) cash is in hand

I got in really late tonight so sometime this weekend I'll do the write-up on my install and how I mounted and wired the pumps.

you could always buy new JK axles. it would be something like 3500 for the axles and theyre both 32 spline D44's. and the front is HP. but the bolt pattern is 5x5 i believe and they are slightly wider.

it would be cheaper to fix the weak points on the tj 44's. the rear is fine but the front has a dana 30 outer axle and spindle. the jk's would have to have all the brackets removed and new tj brackets welded on. the jk axles are also wider.

John, you know what might be the best option is to sell your Jeep and get a Rubi. If your's isn't too SCUFFed up, and I don't think it is, just keep an eye out for a good deal on a used one, if you get lucky, you might find one worth less than yours (on paper) and have some $ left over for more mods.  BTW, since you like sand, I'd stick with an auto.

I have given that some thought, and I've looked on line and most Rubicons are still priced well over what I paid for mine. I'll just keep searching for a good deal on some axles. ~rockon

I looked everywhere for a few months and I found a Dana 44 and a Dana 30 out of a TJ on Craigslist for $600. I took them to Dwight Brinkerhoff in Lakeside. He installed 4.88 ring and pinions and front and rear ARBs with a compressor. By the time I was done I had a lot less than buying aftermarket ones. Plus I sold the front Dana 30 and my old rear Dana 35 for a few hunded bucks. What a difference!

That's a lot of coin in my book and the shafts are still a weak link.
