I'm with you on the axles for big tires. If you're swapping axles it doesn't really matter what you're starting with, except leaf springs are much cheaper/easier.
But if you're running up to 35s or so the yota axles hold up a lot better than Jeep axles.
Grands have been built hardcore, but I would only use a later model IFS full body/glass 4runner or Grand for lighter duty wheeling. Big axles and tires would trash the body/frame without lots of work, and all the bodywork/glass is heavy. I spend time in the sand and the Grand's V8 smokes the pants off the XJ 6. Esp if you get the '98 Limited 5.9.
well with yota axles too u gain ground clearance over tons and big axles dont have that much of an advantage over toy axles anymore anyways u throw a set of bobbylong 30 slpines in the front of a toy axle the breaking point is actually rated damn near the same as dana 60 plus the inner shaft will twist 180 degrees before breaking

but i think someone on here isn't giving the #1 selling 4x4 of all time the credit it is due.
just because it the #1 selling doesnt mean anything jeeps are over priced for what they are i garentee i have less money in my truck and its probly more capable than 90 percent of the rigs on here

Face it they are the #1 4x4 for a reason they work the best! ~punk
As for the comment of being more capable.....we're not on here to argue whos is or isn't or who has more money or not my rig was built on a budget too.. I love the Toyotas they are awesome I wish I had a 4runner.
This is turning into the age old Ford verses Chevy never ending battle.... ~clown
Bottom line I like to wheel, I have a Jeep, and I will pull you out when you break doesn't matter what you wheel!!! ~tank

But it wouldn't work or make sense to stick yota axles under a fullsize.

Exactly...arguing it is rediculous. There's no bottom line better vehicle. Different vehicles for diffferent terrain, different uses, and different tastes. I like fuuuuullsizes...they don't always fit, but they usually go over what they don't fit around...and you can take the whole family...and all their junk. I will say I get tired of the Jeep superiority complex. I don't get it here, but I've gotten it elsewhere. "Your fullsize won't fit on this trail..." next thing you know, I'm offering a strap...and being turned down cuz they're too proud.

~hammer no arguement here........I would wheel a pacer if it had 4 wheel drive. ~scooter Back to the GC cool rigs but IMO too much body & cost too much to build although the V8 is really cool! ~punk I think David had the best idea The "disposable" beater ~punk

I love the fact that you guys are giving each other ~poo don't get me wrong , just want to make sure we keep pretty much on topic. You guys will like the fact that when you wheel with David W. there is not quiting in him so you should be entertained.

Come to think of it, I dunno if I will be at SCUFF FEST....no 4x4s left.
Eric wants to bring his buggy, but he blew a head gasket Sat PM.

I saw a GC Tsi V8 for sale on way home from work today. $2800 Should be 97-98. Has goofy CV front driveshaft and CVs where the the axleshaft u-joints should be.
What's this nonsense?
What about the rest of the drivetrain?
Realistically, if it was gonna be mine I'd probably be going one ton drivetrain from the engine back. The front axle looks puuuuny, like a dana 21, haha!
Then again maybe some alloy shafts would live with 35s.
