I use this

http://www.buyersproducts.com/Towing-Cargo-Control/Pintle-Hook-Mount/

with this

http://www.thehollandgroupinc.com/Portal/Products/Couplers/PintleHooks/PH16B/

=tow a 2" ball trailer, a pintle trailer (I have one for offroad/heavy duty) or easily and securely attach a tow strap/chain. My pintle mount is the 18" tall one so it adjusts way down for my lifted truck to pull a trailer or way up when I want to lift/pull to drag a vehicle out of the desert or something.
I carry a 3/8" load binder chain. I also carry a set of tow truck "keys". It's a ring with 3 different hooks on it for hooking into the frame of vehicles that do not have tow hooks. Also a 4"x30' strap of course.

I don't have one of these hooks since I have my pintle but we have one for sale at the shop.

Much better than these I think.

Oh yeah...never put a strap on a hitch ball, they're not made for a lot of side load and will become a deadly missle.
